One of the challenges you may face is that the plant begins to lose its flowers before it can produce peppers. Their coaches undergo a certification process that teaches the proper technique for tackling and blocking, as well as concussion protocol.Growing Carolina Reaper peppers is relatively simple but can sometimes present challenges. The Carolina Reapers also use equipment that helps to reduce injury. “And it had nothing to do with a concussion.” While playing in Clover last year, Mark said that only 1 of their 31 kids got injured. To prevent head and neck injuries, the Carolina Reapers instruct players to remove their heads from the tackle and use their arms, chest, and shoulders instead. Recalling how he was taught to ram his head into his opponent’s chest, Mark said, “Football deservedly got a bad reputation.” Today, his teams learn to play in an entirely different way. In addition to making the kids better players, the Loves also prioritize safety. They know the route trees, they know how to tackle, they know how to block,” Mark said. Raising their kids in Tampa, FL, and Rancho Cucamonga, CA for a few years, the Loves saw the advantages of beginning early. Two of these teams have 35 kids on the roster, which is the league maximum. Currently, they have a 13U team, two 11U teams, one 9U team, and a Tiny Mite team. The Loves were astounded by the exploding interest in their teams. In May 2022, Pop Warner officially voted their program into the Carolinas Pop Warner league and Mid-South region. Mark and Jennifer got to work building the Fort Mill Athletic Association and the Carolina Reapers. This sparked the entire family’s enthusiasm for more football. The Loves and a group of dedicated parents pursued options for starting a team last year and were able to play a season under the Clover Pop Warner organization. “Our main reason for starting this team was to provide kids a year of tackle experience before heading to middle school,” Mark said. According to Mark, “I didn’t want them to play football, I wanted them to choose to play football.” Once they made that choice, Mark had to figure out where they could learn the game. Like their parents, Harper and Greyson Love also gravitated toward the sport. The 9U Carolina Reapers swarm their opponent. Jennifer, who grew up in Chester, is a former high school cheerleader who loves football. Mark started tackle at age 6, played at the Naval Academy, and then transferred to USC to finish his college career as a linebacker. Football is deeply ingrained into the Loves’ life. When Mark and Jennifer Love moved from Ranch Cucamonga, CA back to their home state of South Carolina, they were surprised that tackle football wasn’t an option for kids in Fort Mill.
